Mastering Field of View in Gaming
Field of View (FOV) represents the extent of the observable game world that is seen on the display at any given moment. A higher FOV allows you to see more of your surroundings, which is crucial in competitive first-person shooters for spotting enemies in your peripheral vision. However, setting it too high can cause a 'fisheye' distortion effect and make targets in the center of your screen appear much smaller and harder to hit.
Horizontal vs Vertical FOV
Games use different underlying math to render FOV. Some games, like CS2 and Apex Legends, lock their FOV based on the 4:3 aspect ratio (meaning a '90 FOV' is actually 106 degrees on a 16:9 monitor). Other games, like Rainbow Six Siege, use Vertical FOV. To maintain a consistent visual experience across games, you must convert these values so the actual horizontal degrees rendered on your monitor remain identical.
Aspect Ratios and Ultrawide Monitors
If you upgrade from a standard 16:9 monitor to a 21:9 ultrawide, your FOV needs to be adjusted. Most modern games use 'Hor+' scaling, meaning they keep the Vertical FOV locked and automatically expand the Horizontal FOV to fill the extra screen space.
