What is an Accelerometer?
An accelerometer is a hardware sensor that measures changes in velocity (acceleration) along the X, Y, and Z axes. It detects both dynamic acceleration (shaking, falling, driving) and static acceleration (the constant downward pull of Earth's gravity).
Gravity vs Linear Acceleration
When your phone is sitting perfectly still on a flat table, the accelerometer is not reading 'zero'. It is reading exactly 1G (9.8 m/s²) pulling straight down on the Z-axis due to gravity. By isolating this gravity vector, your phone knows which way is 'down', allowing it to automatically rotate your screen from portrait to landscape.
The Bubble Level
Because the accelerometer can precisely measure the angle of gravity hitting the X and Y axes, it can be used as a highly accurate spirit level (bubble level). If both the X and Y axes read 0 m/s², the phone is perfectly flat relative to the center of the Earth.
