Keyboard Polling Rate Test
The Keyboard Polling Rate Test is a free browser-based tool that estimates how frequently your keyboard sends input reports to your computer. Polling rate, measured in Hertz (Hz), determines the maximum speed at which your keyboard can communicate new key states to your operating system. A 1000Hz polling rate means your keyboard reports its state 1000 times per second, delivering updates every single millisecond.
This tool works by measuring the time delta between consecutive keydown events when you hold a key. When a key is held, the operating system generates repeated keydown events based on the keyboard's report rate and the OS key repeat settings. By timing the intervals between these events, we can estimate the effective input frequency your system is receiving from your keyboard.
The distinction between USB polling rate and key repeat rate is important to understand. Your keyboard's USB polling rate (set in firmware or companion software) determines how often the keyboard controller checks for new switch states and reports them. However, the OS key repeat rate — controlled by your operating system settings — may throttle or modify the frequency at which repeated keydown events are delivered to applications. This means browser-measured rates often reflect the OS repeat rate rather than the raw USB polling rate.
For competitive gaming, keyboard polling rate directly impacts input responsiveness. At 125Hz (the default for most standard keyboards), there is an 8ms window between each report. At 1000Hz, this window shrinks to just 1ms. While the difference may seem trivial, in fast-paced competitive games where frame-perfect inputs matter, reducing this window provides a measurable edge. Many professional esports players insist on 1000Hz keyboards for this reason.
To use this tool effectively, press and hold a single key for several seconds. Avoid pressing additional keys during the measurement, as switching between keys resets the tracking. Let the readings stabilize for about 3-5 seconds before noting the average Hz value. The longer you hold, the more accurate the average becomes.
The tool displays five metrics: Current Hz shows the instantaneous frequency calculated from recent event deltas, Average Hz provides the overall mean across all collected samples, Max Hz records the highest frequency spike detected, Avg Delta shows the mean time between events in milliseconds, and Samples counts the total number of event intervals measured.
Common polling rate tiers you might see include 125Hz (8ms delta, standard USB keyboards), 250Hz (4ms delta), 500Hz (2ms delta), and 1000Hz (1ms delta, gaming keyboards). Some premium keyboards from brands like Razer, Corsair, SteelSeries, and Wooting now offer 4000Hz or even 8000Hz polling rates, though diminishing returns set in beyond 1000Hz for most practical use cases.
If your measured rate seems lower than expected, check your keyboard's companion software to verify the polling rate setting is correctly applied. Also check your operating system's key repeat rate settings — on Windows, this is found in Control Panel > Keyboard. On macOS, check System Preferences > Keyboard. Increasing the key repeat speed in your OS settings may result in higher measured frequencies in this tool.
