What is Monitor Ghosting?
Monitor ghosting is a display artifact where a faint trail or shadow appears behind fast-moving objects on your screen. It occurs because the pixels on the LCD panel cannot switch colors fast enough to keep up with the content being displayed, causing the previous frame's image to linger momentarily. Regular diagnostic verification ensures that your hardware operates at peak factory specifications and delivers reliable performance across gaming and professional tasks.
Types of Ghosting Artifacts
There are several distinct types of motion artifacts that can appear on a monitor: Proper display adjustments also prevent excessive eye strain during long gaming or productivity sessions by balancing peak white levels with ambient room illumination. Utilizing standardized browser benchmarks eliminates the guesswork from troubleshooting, giving you real-time data to optimize your setup without third-party software.
- Standard Ghosting (Trailing): A dark or colored shadow that follows behind a moving object. Caused by slow pixel response times. Common on older VA and IPS panels.
- Overshoot (Inverse Ghosting / Coronas): A bright white or colored halo that appears AHEAD of a moving object. Caused by the monitor's overdrive circuit pushing pixels too aggressively past their target brightness. This is fixable by lowering your monitor's overdrive/response time setting in the OSD menu.
- Motion Blur: A general smearing or blurring of the entire image during fast camera movement. Related to the pixel persistence time and refresh rate of the panel.
How to Reduce Ghosting
To minimize ghosting, ensure your monitor is running at its native (highest) refresh rate. In your monitor's On-Screen Display (OSD) menu, adjust the Overdrive or Response Time setting — typically 'Normal' or 'Medium' provides the best balance between reducing ghosting without introducing overshoot. Enabling motion blur reduction features like ULMB, ELMB, or DyAc can also help, though these reduce brightness. When a monitor's overdrive setting is too aggressive, pixels overshoot their target brightness during transitions, creating a bright "corona" or halo artifact that trails behind moving objects.
