DPI, or Dots Per Inch, is the fundamental metric that defines the relationship between your physical hand movement and the resulting cursor movement on your screen. When a mouse is set to 800 DPI, its internal optical or laser sensor is calibrated to report 800 discrete movement 'counts' to your computer for every one inch (2.54 cm) the mouse physically travels across a surface. Your operating system then translates each count into one pixel of cursor movement (assuming no acceleration or scaling is applied). This means at 800 DPI, moving your mouse exactly 1 inch to the right will move your cursor exactly 800 pixels to the right.
Our DPI Test leverages the browser's MouseEvent.movementX and MouseEvent.movementY properties to capture raw, unadulterated pixel-level cursor displacement data. Unlike tracking clientX/clientY positions (which can be affected by screen scaling and display DPI), the movement properties provide the actual number of hardware pixels the cursor traveled between frames. This approach yields the most accurate results possible from a browser-based tool, closely mirroring the precision of dedicated desktop DPI testing applications.
For competitive gamers, verifying your DPI is not a trivial exercise — it is a critical part of your setup calibration. Many mouse sensors round their DPI to the nearest supported hardware step. For example, a sensor might advertise 800 DPI but actually output 793 or 812 DPI at that setting. While a 1-2% deviation might seem negligible, when you translate this through an in-game sensitivity multiplier and across thousands of hours of muscle memory, even a small discrepancy can affect your eDPI (Effective DPI) calculations and cross-game sensitivity conversions.
To achieve the most accurate measurement with our tool, you must first disable all forms of mouse acceleration on your operating system. On Windows, navigate to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Mouse → Additional mouse settings → Pointer Options, and ensure 'Enhance pointer precision' is unchecked. On macOS, mouse acceleration is enabled by default and cannot be fully disabled through System Preferences alone — you may need a third-party utility like 'LinearMouse' or 'SteerMouse'. Once acceleration is disabled, use a physical ruler on your mousepad to measure the exact distance you plan to move your mouse.
