The Keyboard Ghosting Test is a free online diagnostic tool that reveals exactly how many simultaneous keypresses your keyboard can handle. Ghosting is a hardware limitation where pressing certain combinations of keys causes one or more keys to either fail to register entirely, or worse, produce phantom keypresses that you never actually made. Ghosting occurs due to the electrical design of a keyboard's key matrix. Most keyboards use a grid of rows and columns to detect which keys are pressed. This is a fundamental hardware limitation that cannot be fixed with software.

N-Key Rollover (NKRO) is the industry solution to ghosting. A keyboard with full NKRO can correctly detect every single key being pressed at the same time, regardless of the combination. This is achieved by adding a diode to each individual key switch, preventing electrical signals from bleeding across the matrix. Most gaming keyboards advertise anti-ghosting or full NKRO as a key selling point.

To use this test, simply press and hold as many keys simultaneously as possible. Every key that successfully registers will light up green on the visual keyboard layout. The 'Currently Pressed' counter shows how many keys are being detected right now, while 'Max Simultaneous' records the highest number of concurrent keys detected during your session. The Rollover Rating automatically classifies your keyboard based on the maximum achieved.

Common rollover tiers include: Limited Rollover (1-2 keys, very basic keyboards), 3-Key Rollover (budget keyboards), 6-Key Rollover or 6KRO (standard USB keyboards using the default HID protocol), and Full NKRO (10+ keys, gaming keyboards). The 6-key limit is actually a limitation of the default USB HID keyboard protocol, not necessarily the keyboard hardware itself. Many gaming keyboards circumvent this by using alternative USB protocols or PS/2 connections.

Understanding ghosting is particularly important for gaming. In most PC games, you frequently need to press movement keys (W, A, S, D), modifier keys (Shift for sprint, Ctrl for crouch), and action keys (Space for jump) all at the same time. If your keyboard ghosts on the W+A+Shift+Space combination, your character will fail to execute the intended movement. FPS players, RTS players, and fighting game enthusiasts are especially affected by ghosting limitations.

Beyond gaming, ghosting can also affect music production software where keyboard shortcuts involve 3-4 simultaneous keys, programming IDEs with complex multi-key shortcuts, and accessibility tools that rely on modifier key combinations.
