How Does an Internet Speed Test Work?

An internet speed test measures the actual performance of your network connection by transferring data between your device and a remote server. The test works by downloading a chunk of data from a server and precisely timing how long the transfer takes. By dividing the amount of data by the time elapsed, we calculate your download speed in megabits per second (Mbps). Factors That Affect Your Speed Test Results

Many variables influence your speed test results. Your Wi-Fi signal strength is often the biggest bottleneck — testing over a wired Ethernet connection will typically show faster, more consistent results. Network congestion during peak hours (evenings and weekends) can reduce speeds significantly. The distance between you and the test server matters, as data must physically travel through fiber optic cables and network switches. Other devices on your network consuming bandwidth (streaming, gaming, video calls) will reduce your available speed. For the most accurate results, close other tabs and applications, connect via Ethernet if possible, and run multiple tests at different times of day.

Understanding Your Speed Test Results

Download speed determines how quickly you can load web pages, stream videos, and download files — most users need at least 25 Mbps for comfortable HD streaming and web browsing. Upload speed affects how quickly you can send files, make video calls, and live stream — typical home connections have much slower upload than download speeds. Latency (ping) measures the round-trip delay for a data packet and is critical for gaming and video conferencing — under 30ms is excellent, while over 100ms causes noticeable lag. Jitter measures the variation in latency and should ideally be below 10ms for stable connections.
