What is a Ping Test?

A ping test measures the network latency — the time it takes for a small data packet to travel from your device to a server and back. The result, measured in milliseconds (ms), is called the round-trip time (RTT). Unlike a speed test which measures how much data you can transfer, a ping test measures how responsive your connection is. Low latency is critical for real-time applications like online gaming, video conferencing, VoIP calls, and live trading platforms. Our browser-based ping test uses HTTP requests to measure the round-trip time to various servers, giving you an accurate picture of your connection's responsiveness.

Understanding Ping Results

A ping under 20ms is excellent and suitable for competitive gaming and real-time trading. Between 20-50ms is very good for most online activities. From 50-100ms is acceptable for casual gaming and video calls, though you might notice slight delays. Above 100ms, lag becomes noticeable in games and calls, and above 200ms, most real-time applications become frustrating to use. Our test also measures jitter, which is the variation in ping times. High jitter (over 30ms) causes unstable connections where some packets arrive quickly and others are delayed, resulting in stuttering video calls and rubber-banding in games.

How to Improve Your Ping

The most effective way to reduce ping is to use a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi. Close background applications that use the internet (cloud sync, updates, streaming). Choose game servers or services geographically close to you. Upgrade your router firmware and consider using Quality of Service (QoS) settings to prioritize gaming or video call traffic. If your ISP consistently delivers high ping, consider switching to a provider with better routing to your frequently accessed servers.
