Inside your mouse, beneath the plastic buttons, sit mechanical microswitches (often made by Omron, Kailh, or TTC). When you press down, a tiny metal leaf spring snaps down to touch a contact pad, completing an electrical circuit. To drag an item, you must keep that circuit continuously closed. However, as these mechanical components endure millions of clicks over their lifespan, the metal can warp, lose tension, or develop microscopic carbon buildup.
When this degradation happens, maintaining a solid electrical connection becomes difficult. Even if your finger is pressing firmly on the plastic shell, the internal metal spring might momentarily lift off the contact pad for just a few milliseconds. Your computer instantly registers this microscopic disconnect as a 'Mouse Up' event, causing whatever you were dragging to drop.
